Creating Joyful Memories
The holiday season is a time for togetherness, joy, and cherished traditions that create lasting memories. Whether it’s the scent of freshly baked cookies wafting through the air, gathering around to read timeless Christmas stories, or bundling up to marvel at twinkling lights, these traditions remind us of the beauty of the season. Across the country, unique celebrations like Victorian Christmas in Nevada City, Cornish Christmas in Grass Valley where I grew up were so fun to experience and now Christmas Storybook Land in Albany just north of Eugene– bring history and community to life, making the holidays even more magical.
The Heartwarming Power of Traditions
Family Christmas traditions are more than just festive activities—they’re an opportunity to connect across generations and celebrate love, gratitude, and joy. Some beloved traditions include:
- Baking Holiday Treats: Rolling out dough for sugar cookies, decorating gingerbread houses, or making grandma’s famous fudge. Baking is often a multi-generational activity, filled with laughter and sweet rewards.
- Reading Christmas Stories: Timeless tales like The Night Before Christmas and The Polar Express stir wonder and nostalgia.
- Caroling and Music: Singing carols or playing holiday playlists brings people together in the spirit of joy.
- Looking at Christmas Lights: Bundling up and walking or driving through dazzling light displays is a magical way to enjoy the season.
- Attending Christmas Fairs: Local markets and fairs bring communities together to celebrate with handmade crafts, festive foods, and holiday cheer.

Maintaining these traditions helps families stay connected, creates meaningful rituals, and passes down the magic of the season to younger generations.
I grew up in a very small town in Northern California called Grass Valley. There is so much history there and so many fun things to do around every holiday! But some of my favorites are Victorian and Cornish Christmas!
Victorian Christmas
Nevada City, California

Nevada City’s Victorian Christmas is a step back in time to the charm and elegance of the 19th century. Held in the historic downtown district, this celebration is like walking into a Dickens novel.
- What to Expect:
- Lamp-lit streets filled with carolers in period costumes.
- Artisan vendors offering handcrafted gifts and holiday treats.
- Horse-drawn carriages and live entertainment, creating a cozy, festive atmosphere.
“The aroma of roasted chestnuts fill the air, along with cries of street vendors hawking their wares and lamp-lit streets filled with Christmas treasures.. It’s the one & only Victorian Christmas.Welcome the holiday season in Nevada City. It’s a magical setting of hilly streets with authentic gas lamps, wandering carolers dressed in Victorian attire, and visitors sharing holiday cheer and good tidings. This annual family tradition has been held since 1978 and takes place two Wednesday evenings and three Sunday afternoons in December. There are holiday activities for all ages including live entertainment, yuletide treats and libations, and Father Christmas!”
Since its inception, Victorian Christmas has drawn locals and visitors alike to experience the romance of the past while celebrating the joy of the present.
Cornish Christmas
Grass Valley, California

Cornish Christmas in Grass Valley honors the area’s Cornish heritage with a festive twist. This celebration, rooted in the mining history of the region, offers a unique cultural holiday experience. Celebrated in downtown on the beautiful Main and Mill Street!
- Highlights Include:
- Authentic Cornish pasties and traditional foods.
- Local artisans, live music, and performances.
- Victorian and Cornish costumes that transport attendees to a bygone era.
“Step into the warmth and wonder of an Old-Fashioned Christmas Street Faire, where the charm of a bygone era comes alive under twinkling lights and festive decorations. Stroll through streets lined with stalls brimming with handcrafted gifts, seasonal treats, and local treasures.
The air is filled with the sweet aroma of roasted chestnuts, spiced cider, and holiday confections as carolers in Victorian attire serenade passersby with beloved holiday tunes. Children can meet Santa Claus, enjoy festive crafts, and marvel at dazzling holiday displays while families and friends gather around the fire pit, eating roasted chestnuts and sipping hot holiday beverages on a crisp winter evening. With a sparkling Christmas tree and a warm, nostalgic atmosphere, this timeless street fair captures the spirit of the season and brings the magic of a traditional Cornish Christmas to life.”
Cornish Christmas is more than an event—it’s a community gathering that keeps the spirit of history and togetherness alive.
When we decided to move to Eugene we have been on the look out for fun events to take our kids to experience and create memories. This year we found another great one! Christmas Storybook Land which is about a 40 min drive North of Eugene.
